Rick Blooms in Tivoli Gardens
Rick put on an extraordinary performance in Tivoli Gardens last night [3rd July 2009] in front of a capacity crowd. The concert was a little different from usual as it formed part of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, so instead of being back by his usual band, he was backed by the Tivoli Orchestra lead by Peder Kragerup. Rick's set included classic crooning songs and some of his own hits as well.
Despite the concert not starting until 10pm, fans started to arrive as early as 6pm in order to find the perfect spot in front of stage. Some had come from Belgium, Holland and even as far as the United States just to see this concert! The weather was fantastic and people were in good spirits. A group of Swedish lads shouted with excitement for Rick to come out onto stage. It was the perfect start to what went on to be a great evening.
Still daylight, Rick emerged on the stroke of 10pm and opened with Fly Me To The Moon followed by I Got You Under My Skin. Before the next song got underway, the Swedish lads, thought to be in their early 20s shouted out for Never Gonna Give You Up. 'How old are you boys?' Rick asked, to which they responded 'How old are you?'. 'Too old' Rick replied. The heckling had been both affectionate and nicely timed as the next song was You Make Me Feel So Young.
About a third of the way through the set, Rick asked his audience if they knew a song of his. Never Gonna Give You Up? This started the crowd singing the song back to him. 'Oh so you know it then? We're gonna do that one later!' which resulted in a huge cheer!
Rick went on to sing a few more of the classic songs before some of his own which were played in their normal style with the exception of She Wants To Dance With Me which was adapted to a jazz style. As you would expect, Rick closed his show with Never Gonna Give You Up which electrified the audience. Despite the Rick and the band leaving the stage, the crowd would not leave and continued to should for more. Eventually, Rick re-emerged and said 'look, we didn't rehearse any more songs... but we can do this one again. The crowd went wild!

Rick in your town?
Rick has become the latest artist to team up with a website called owngig.com - a move which may well see him playing in a town near you!
For years, private shows have been exclusive to organisations with wealth and status but Owngig's great idea is set to democratise this process, allowing like-minded fans to book a private show by registering their interest.
When enough fans have registered, owngig.com contact the artist and make the booking on the fans' behalf. It could be a one-off local intimate venue or even a mini-tour. It simply depends on the amount of interest.
This would not be limited to the UK - it could be anywhere in the world so it will be really exciting o see how this unfolds.

White Christmas
If you don't live in Denmark, then you might not know about the marvel of a performance Rick put in over the Christmas. He appeared on a show called DR's Store Juleshow which was a 90 minute Christmas show that featured a variety of Danish and international acts including Katie Mulua.
Rick sang a medley of his songs including Together Forever, Whenever You Need Somebody, Cry For Help and of course Never Gonna Give You Up! What makes this performance different from others is that he was backed by one of Denmark's finest orchestras which put a polished shine on Rick's golden hits.
Rick made a further appearance to close the show with a cover of Bing Crosby's White Christmas. We think it was an outstanding performance but you can judge for yourself by clicking the following links:

Rick Astley For Governor
Last week, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested on charges of corruption and the Attorney General has requested the Supreme Court strip him of his powers. After the arrest, RedEye, a major newspaper in Chicago, decided to engage the people of Illinois through its newspaper and social media platforms asking them who they would like to see as their next Governor. So far the results are showing that Rick Astley overwhelmingly the people's favourite to take the post. Rick has become somewhat of a hero in the United States over the last 12 months and his appearance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade touched millions of Americans. The people of Illinois at least feel Rick would 'Never let his voters down'.
In tune with its readers, RedEye contacted Rick's manager, Tops Henderson to ask Rick if he would consider taking the post. Rick has issued the following statement:
'I am so honoured and very excited to be put forward for the post of Governor of Illinois. I think I could do a good job and bring a fresh perspective to the great state and it's politics.'

Fans Get Christmas Treat
You may remember in 2005, we were treated to Rick singing 'Silent Night' when he performed at Norwich Cathedral on Christmas Eve. Well it looks like we're in for another treat this year. After his recent concerts in Denmark, Rick travelled slightly north to Aalborg where he recorded something for Danish Television. We understand that it is some kind of Christmas special which will also involve other singers such as Katie Melua.
The show was recorded over four days. The 1st day was a basic rehearsal, 2nd day a dressed rehearsal, 3rd day a dressed rehearsal with a performance, 4th day, going over the performance again! Rick's contribution will include singing a 4 song medley but as top of the bill, he will also be closing the show with a well known Christmas song.
The show is called 'DRs Store Juleshow' which translated to English is 'DRs Big Christmas Show'. DR is a large national broadcaster, the Danish equivalent of the BBC. The broadcast goes out on the 19th December. If you can understand Danish, you can read on.

Rick A Hit At Thanksgiving Parade
Rick was greeted by rapturous cheers as he did his very first Rick roll at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in New York.
The narrator introduced the Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends float as it pulled up in front of NBC cameras and warned spectators to listen carefully as there would be a special musical surprise. Bloo and his friends break into their song 'You're My Best Friend' and about 20 seconds into the song, a vinyl scratch could be heard and then the next thing you know you can hear the familiar intro to 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.
To begin with the audience seemed a little unsure as to what was going on but then to everyone's surprise and delight, out walks the REAL Rick Astley dressed in a long black coat and gloves. The crowd immediately signalled their appreciation with almighty cheers!

Esbjerg Concert
Rick's next stop in Denmark was a city all the way over on the opposite side of the country, Esbjerg, a good three to four hours drive from Næstved. The venue was intimate and boasted some pretty nice architecture. There was some beautiful stage lighting but the best thing about this arena was the sound and quite probably the architecture had something to do with that. The bar in the foyer was serving up drinks which probably worked out well for the fans that turned up two hours before the start of the show.
Despite following the same set list as in Næstved, this show had plenty of character of its own. Rick had noticed a fella who had been dancing enthusiastically all evening. When it came to 'My Arms Keep Missing You', Rick invited him to join him on stage, found out his name was Paul, and asked him if he'd be okay with dancing through the song. He also offered up the chance for someone to sing with him on stage, an opportunity taken up by Debby, who had travelled from Holland to see the show. Debby gave her all but found out how hard it is to hear yourself with the band playing so loud behind you. Rick made her evening even more special by slow dancing with her and putting her hands on his backside! Paul was absolutely fabulous giving the audience plenty to grin about.
All things considered these Danish concerts were absolutely fabulous and hopefully will set the standard for future gigs to come. Having seen Rick perform four times this year, I can conclusively say that his voice is bigger and better than it was 20 years ago. Not only that, but there is no sign of the shy lad he used to be. Rick entertained his audiences not just with his voice but with his banter also. He gave 2 confident and polished performances.
I had the opportunity to speak to some fans before and after the shows. I learned that people had travelled from Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, England, France and the United States!
The full setlist is as follows:
- Together Forever
- It Would Take A Strong Strong Man
- The Love Has Gone
- When I Fall In Love
- She Wants To Dance With Me
- Don't Say Goodbye
- Hold Me In Your Arms
- The Ones You Love
- Take Me To Your Heart
- Cry For Help
- Hopelessly
- Ain't Too Proud To Beg
- My Arms Keep Missing You
- Whenever You Need Somebody
- Never Gonna Give You Up

Næstved Concert
Rick's first stop in Denmark was the town of Næstved which is just under an hours drive from Copenhagen. The concert was actually being held by the local soccer team who are in the second tier of Danish football. This might sound a bit unusual to most of us but the club have found by inviting bands to play at their training facility, they are able to generate significant revenue which they then pump into their youth team for their development. The club were extremely proud to bring Rick Astley to their grounds, partly because it would guarantee them a healthy number of ticket sales but also because the Danish people have a special place in their hearts for him.
The concert got underway at 10pm. A club representative took temporary possession of a microphone as he welcomed to the stage 'Europe's Best Act Ever, Rick Astley!' As the band opened with the familiar 'Together Forever', Rick made his entrance. We are so used to him wearing his trademark suits and tonight he was not going to disappoint. This time he is wearing a black shirt with a matching black tie which had something sparkling going on where you might otherwise expect a logo to be. The venue is now filled to capacity with an audience that wanted to party from the very first song.
During the course of the evening, Rick gave a personal friend who he referred to as Adam, a special Birthday treat by getting the whole venue, including himself, to sing Happy Birthday in both Danish and English. But Adam wasn't the only person to get a special treat. Rick also gave one fan Charlotte a night to remember by asking her to join him on stage to sing 'My Arms Keep Missing You'. He jokes that he only ever performed the song a few times and of all his hits, it's the one he struggles to remember the words to!
The full setlist is as follows:
- Together Forever
- It Would Take A Strong Strong Man
- The Love Has Gone
- When I Fall In Love
- She Wants To Dance With Me
- Don't Say Goodbye
- Hold Me In Your Arms
- The Ones You Love
- Take Me To Your Heart
- Cry For Help
- Hopelessly
- Ain't Too Proud To Beg
- My Arms Keep Missing You
- Whenever You Need Somebody
- Never Gonna Give You Up
As a die hard fan, its almost impossible to pick out the best song of the night. I very much enjoyed the inclusion of 'The Ones You Love' and 'Hopelessly'. As a critic, one could only watch in awe at how well he nailed 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg'. The difference in the audience was noticeable. At the Here & Now concerts, the crowd has included fans from all of the acts and the climax of 'Never Gonna Give You Up' has lifted the roof but it was a moment of mixed feelings for an audience of Rick fans. It was the realisation that this was the last song of the night.
For the warm welcome he was given, Rick rewarded his audience with a truly remarkable performance. It's absolutely astonishing to think that he's only performed a handful of times since breaking his 15 year retirement. Rick may have said publicly that he thinks his MTV Award win was a bit silly but when he puts in displays of this calibre then people are surely gonna throw that back at him.

Rick and comedian Peter Kay helped Helen Newlove launch an appeal which is aimed at stopping youths becoming involved in alcohol and violence. Her husband and father of 3, Garry Newlove, died in hospital after he was kicked unconscious in August 2007 outside his Warrington home when he confronted three drunken youths who were vandalising his wife's car.
Mrs Newlove teamed up with Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club to host a gala evening at The Halliwell Jones Stadium to start off the campaign and as part of the evening, Rick performed his Greatest Hits. Speaking about the tragedy, Rick said "It was horrific what happened so if I can do something for the campaign then I'm glad to help. It should really be the government or councils who put money into a project like this to improve things, but I know Helen will go all out to make it happen anyway."
Peter Kay added "This is so important - what happened to Garry was awful, so when Helen wrote asking me to help I rang her up straight away and said yes", he said. "A lot of people would have just given up, but she's got a real determination and it's inspirational that she wants to try and make something positive out of something negative."

Contrary to many stories published this week by various sources, Rick has not been asked by MTV to perform at their European Music Awards on November 6th. He has received an invitation to attend the ceremony but has not yet made up his mind as to whether he will make the journey up to Liverpool.
10th October 2008
We can now confirm that Rick has received an invitation from MTV to attend their European Music Awards in November. Speaking late on Friday afternoon (October 10th 2008) Rick's manager Tops Henderson told Forum members that now that they had received an invitation, they would give it serious consideration over the coming days. Rick told the BBC when he first found out about his nomination that he did not think he'd be making the journey to Liverpool where the awards will take place. Since then messages of support have been flooding in from fans from all over the world urging him to collect the award.
"I'd love so much for Rick to collect his award because he's a rare kind of singer that positively inspires every generation" says Kaizan Baria from Mumbai, India.
4th August 2008
Rick returns to the UK this week after his 'mini-tour' of the Far East. Upon his arrival in Manila, the first leg of his three show campaign, Rick was welcomed in such a fashion that he could be forgiven for thinking he'd just touched down in 1988! Whilst much of the world had forgotten about Rick Astley, that is until the recent 'Rick-rolling' phenomenon hit the headlines, it would seem that The Philippines had never forgotten. Patiently waiting in the hope that Rick might one day visit, the Filipino people have had to make do with their own tribute versions of Rick Astley, including comedy actor Roderick Paulate who has been dubbed 'Rick Astley of the Philippines' because of the numerous times he's performed Rick's hits.
In a press conference held the day before the concert, Rick was asked if he had heard of Roderick. "Yes. I'll tell you one thing. If he comes tomorrow, he's coming onstage with me." To the delight of the crowd, Roderick did turn up and Rick sportingly let him take over the mic! A clip of this can be viewed here.
Later in the show a Rick gave a fan the chance to sing along with him, he even gave a her a hug and placed her hand on his buttocks! That made her night! This can be viewed here .
Rick's second gig in the Far East was in Jakarta, we have very little feedback from this night but we do know one lucky fan got to go on stage with him. There's one photo to the left including of the big screen he featured on for the benefit of those all the way to the back!
Last but not least, Rick performed on the second day of the Singfest Festival 2008 in Singapore along with One Republic, Pussycat Dolls and Alicia Keys. You can see some photos from this on the left. Rick is feeling exhausted not just from the jetlag but also with the excitement of playing in front of such crowds! He's now looking forward to taking off his 'Rick Astley' jacket, absorbing the great time he's had and tells us he might consider doing more shows in the future.
Photos can be seen in the gallery.

Flashbacks Of AFool was released in UK cinemas on 18th April 2008. "Why am I reading this on Rick Astley's website?", I hear you ask. Well, Lene Bausager, Rick's wife, was one of the producers of this much talked about movie. Her career in film started to take an upward curve in the mid 90s and she was part of the crew that produced British blockbuster "Trainspotting". She has made a number of short films with her business partner Sean Ellis, most notibly for Cashback (2004) which won 6 major awards including an Oscar for Best Short Film. The success of Cashback saw it converted into a feature-length film in 2006 and is finally being released in the UK on May 9th 2008. I haven't seen Flashbacks of a Fool to give you my review but if Cashback is anything to go by then its going to be brilliant! I also think the fact Daniel Craig has a major role is suggestive of a really good script. Click here for more.
Click here to see a picture of Lene and Rick at the 78th Annual Academy Awards. And at Flashback's premier here.
16th March 2008
Rick Astley has been interviewed by Steve Levine for the successful radio series "The Producers". The show is to be aired on Easter Bank Holiday Monday 24th March at 6pm.
The Record Producers returns on Easter Bank Holiday Monday with a profile of one of the most successful British production & songwriting teams of the late 80s and early 90s - Stock Aitken & Waterman. Modelled on Motown's Hit Factory of the 1960s, they produced a seemingly endless stream of hits for Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, Sonia and Mel & Kim as well as bringing continued chart success to Bananarama and re-igniting the career of Donna Summer amongst others.
For many, their commercial success has overshadowed any critical appraisal of their craft, but this edition in the series of documentary specials adjusts that balance. Richard Allinson and Steve Levine assess the musicianship, prolific songwriting and major changes to the recording and mixing technology that lay at the heart of the production team, exploring Mike Stock and Matt Aitken's backgrounds in various bands as well as Pete Waterman's pre-S.A.W.success in the record industry, which included work with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff in Philadelphia, early entrepreneurial skills with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and production sessions with his songwriting hero Lamont Dozier - all of which contributed to the formation of PWL, modelled on the self-sufficient label attitude of Philadelphia International.
But as with every programme in the Record Producers series, the main focus is the music. With brand new interviews from not only all three members of the team but also Jason Donovan, Rick Astley and Kim Appleby, Richard and Steve assert Stock Atiken and Waterman's position as major contributors to the sound of British pure-pop.
